We find, in the account of Peter's mother-in-law's healing, how Jesus, having left the synagogue of Capernaum, went to the house of Peter's mother-in-law and found her prostrate with fever and, in the gesture of approaching and touching her hand, lifting up immediately, made then served. We want, through the critical historical method, to verify the meaning of cures and exorcisms in the mission of the historical Jesus along with the symbolic meaning, as strategic actions of His mission in announcing and acting as the kingdom of God. Through the actions of the characters, the disciples and Jesus, in the interaction with Peter's mother-in-law who was bedridden, we aim to find the meaning of following and discipleship. As Jesus' actions in a house, we understand that approaching and touching are signs of Jesus' welcome in the specific environment of Galilee. Raising and serving are actions interpreted in a hermeneutic key as updating in words and attitudes the pastoral practice of the "church which goes forth.”

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the pericope of the “healing of Peter's mother-in-law” (Mc 1,29-31) as a paradigm for the concept of “church on the go”, based on the gestures and actions of Jesus in the first healing of the oldest gospel. Raising and serving are actions interpreted in a hermeneutic key as updating in words and attitudes the pastoral practice of a church which goes forth.
