The article offers for the first time a look at mechanisms and frameworks involved in selecting images and texts in interartistic comparison with the Bible, i.e., in approaches to the Bible whose primary aim is the explanation of aspects of the Bible—including its context—from the systematic comparison between verbal (“texts”) and non-verbal codes (“images”). Reflecting on case studies and in conversation with different methodological takes on the issue in earlier scholarship, the article suggests the existence of two dimensions of ‘image delimitation’, a passive and an active dimension. While the conceptual background and the commonality/dissimilarity of comparanda (what is to be compared) are set by the researchers’ premises and tenets, the research problems and questions are pivotal in deciding on a method and the actual selection of comparata (what is compared). As a heuristic device, the distinction of the dimensions of image delimitation leads to at least two hypotheses: (1) epistemological, biographic, institutional, disciplinary, and other factors play a pivotal role in the selection of material even when they are not explicitly stated or reflected; (2) unbalances between assumptions and decisions restrict a significative number of scholars to ‘code comparisons,’ i.e., juxtapositions that are neither fully engaging with artifacts as such, nor with their contexts, be they archaeological or communicative. Furthermore, the presentation of the different strategies for pairing visual evidence and biblical texts and their various presuppositions can be seen as a methodological introduction to interartistic exegesis.
