“Listen to him": the scene of transfiguration in Mk 9,2-8 in apocalyptical approaching

Abstract

The text of Mk 9,2-8 narrates the Transfiguration of Jesus before three of his disciples, in a scene in which he meets Moses and Elijah, and at the end a voice is heard in the cloud that covers them, proclaiming him as the Son of God. This narrative is generally portrayed as an epiphany, in which the divine nature of Jesus is revealed, or as apotheosis, where it is an anticipation of the divine glory that he will inherit with the resurrection. However, through an approximation to the text considering it as apocalyptic gender, it is perceived that the narrative has other implications. This article aims, then, to interpret Mk 9,2-8 from an apocalyptic perspective, seeking the reading context to which the original listeners were, in order to understand the beliefs and perceptions that are on the horizon of the narrative. In this sense, the narrative of the Transfiguration enables us to reproduce the religious experience and beliefs of the early Christian communities, which can be a factor of understanding and clarification for the reality of Latin American religious experiences.
