Abstract

The peculiar language of prophet Hosea works abundantly with feminine and fertility metaphors. The aspect has led scholars that operate by historical methods, to reconstruct the fertility cults with the oracles of the prophet, especially connected with the cultural prostitutes, proceeding highly contested these days. This essay, reviewing this characterization and consensus, rethinks the feminine popular religion in the literary context of Hosea 9.10-17, in the basis of cognitive metaphor theory. We noted the generalized importance of feminine religion in the context of Northern Israel works as source of the metaphor in this text and the socio-political condition as target.
