The mystery expressed in Eph 5:32: the relationship between Christ and his Church

“Christ is always present in his Church” (SC 7). This statement on the mystery of the union of Christ and the Church, consecrated by the Second Vatican Council, refers to Pauline theology, since the ecclesiological images evoked in number seven of Sacrosanctum Concilium, which also appear in Chapter I of Lumen Gentium, find their biblical foundation in Eph 5,32. Uniting Christology and ecclesiology, Ef 5,32 expresses the relationship between Christ and his Church, illustrated by the images of the body and the bride, in which Christ is the head and spouse. The passage presents this relationship as a mystery, a biblical central category of Paul’s thought and has recently become the object of interest due to its rediscovery at the last Council. The correlation between Christ and his Church originates in the mystérion fully revealed by him. So the purpose, mission, and reason for the existence of the Church depend on this mysterious relationship. Then, Vatican II anticipated the third millennium by making an exquisite “return to the sources”. Imbued with Pauline theology of mystery, it presented the Church aggiornata to continue its mission in the world, always related to its head and spouse. The study offers Greek text and translation, analysis of the theme, and concludes that, inspired by its ancestors in the faith who, amid persecutions and tribulations, expressed the newness of the Gospel of Christ, the Church, amid the setbacks of today’s world, still be called to proclaim the mystérion revealed by its head and spouse: Christ.
